SHINGLES - 2023

Shingles explore the distribution of a set of boards so that we can build a plydome structure with overlap of two boards on each corner. Therefore, advanced computational tools are applied to develop optimization algorithms in order to find the most suitable overlaps. The project will be further developed trying the system and methodology on different topologies in order to prove and validate our approach. Lastly, the results of different approaches, including the constructed one, are compared and evaluated giving an insight on the best performance. The shell, was designed in an academic framework during the Master of Parametric Design in Architecture at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and constructed for Art & Gavarres, a festival that starts from the idea that art can be a tool that helps us reflect and change our view of the landscape. This structure has previously been tested in a prototype, and a mock-up has been built to real scale to check its structural behavior in addition to the digital calculations made with the Karamba3D/Kiwi3D software for Grasshopper and Rhino 3D..
